What is a Breast Augmentation?
Scottsdale women come to Dr. Meger for breast augmentation for a wide range of reasons. Some women just want to have more fullness in their cleavage because of poor genetics or age; others have finished breastfeeding and pregnancy and want to regain their youthful breasts; while others may have undergone a mastectomy or double mastectomy. No matter the reason, a breast augmentation is a procedure to increase the size, fullness, and shape of the breasts using silicone or saline implants.
What Happens During a Breast Augmentation Procedure?
During the procedure, Dr. Meger makes an incision near or on the breast (more on incisions below) and places a breast implant behind the breast. Dr. Meger uses his years of training to gently place the implant in the proper position so that it looks as beautiful and natural as possible. Once the implant is in place, Dr. Meger closes the incision with sutures or medical glue.
What Are the Different Types of Implants?
As women begin to look into the idea of getting a breast augmentation, they usually discover more questions than answers. One of the biggest questions that our Scottsdale patients have to answer is which type of implant they want.
Saline implants were some of the very first breast implants available to Scottsdale patients. They are constructed with a thick silicone shell and then inflated with saline solution. Usually, the surgeon will insert saline implants in their deflated state into the breast pocket. This allows the surgeon to make a smaller incision. From there, the surgeon will fill the implant with saline solution. Saline implants tend to produce more “rippling” at the edges which is sometimes visible through the skin.
A very popular option for our Scottsdale patients is silicone breast implants. These types of implants also have a silicone shell but are filled with a silicone jelly. Silicone implants are not filled or inflated like saline implants. Because of that, they usually require a larger incision. However, they tend to feel more natural, and they also may reduce the chances of rippling on the sides. However, it is very difficult to tell when they leak. In fact, most patients have to get an MRI done on their silicone implants every six months to check for leaks.
Cohesive Gel Implants (Gummy Bear Implants)
One of the newest FDA-approved implants are called cohesive gel implants. Because of their texture, they’ve gained the nickname of “gummy bear implants” since they look, feel, and behave very much like the gummy candies. These gummy bear implants are by far the most popular choice for women because they are the most natural feeling. Plus, gummy bear implants are highly resistant to leaks. Still, patients will need to get regular MRIs to make sure there are no leaks.
Incision Options for Breast Augmentation
Scottsdale women often spend a great deal of time thinking about which type of incision they want for their procedure. This is such a hard choice for many patients because it will determine where and how large their postoperative scar will be.
The inframammary scar is made in the bottom fold of the breast. Making the incision here allows Scottsdale patients to hide their scar under bra straps or bikini tops. It also gives Dr. Meger the closest access to the breast pocket. This incision option usually does not interfere with future breastfeeding.
With this option, Dr. Meger makes the incision in the armpit. The implant is then “tunneled” to the breast pocket. Obviously, this option is ideal for Scottsdale women who do not want any scars near their breasts.
Finally, the periareolar incision is made around the nipple. The resulting scar is sometimes called a “lollipop” scar because of the shape it makes. While this allows patients to hide their scar under their bras or swimsuits, it also has a higher chance of interfering with breastfeeding in the future.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation
Scottsdale women will need to do a great deal of planning ahead before their breast augmentation procedure. While Dr. Meger does everything he can to make sure that our patients get gorgeous, natural-looking breasts, the recovery period is largely up to the patient to make sure that their results are not compromised.
- Patients need to have someone drive them home from the procedure and stay with them for 24 hours to make sure there are no
- Our patients are fitted with a compression garment that helps hold the implants in place while the body heals. This is critical to getting the results you want.
- Patients will feel some discomfort after the procedure for the first week. Dr. Meger usually prescribes some pain medication to help with that.
- You’ll get a very detailed list of post-operative care instructions that you should follow.
- Patients should not engage in any kind of strenuous exercise or activity for several weeks after the procedure.
- Most of our patients can go back to work within a week.
